Amazon’s trademarks on Prime date back to the beginning of the program 14 years ago. At the beginning, those trademarks related to the fast-shipping benefits. But in recent years, as Amazon has taken greater control of the shipping process, the Prime logo has become synonymous not just with the program but with the fleet of trucks, delivery vans and airplanes that deliver items to customers.

Amazon’s ascendance among the most valuable companies by market cap shows the influence of technology on the U.S. economy, and Seattle’s strength as a tech hub. The four most valuable companies in the country are now all tech-oriented, and two of them are based in the Seattle area.?The three companies ahead of Amazon are?Apple with a 7 billion market cap, Alphabet with a 2 billion market cap and Microsoft with a market cap of 2 billion.

Amazon’s system, as described, would have a key advantage over big-box warehouse stores: it’s possible to buy in bulk from Amazon without having to get in the car, drive all the way to a massive warehouse, and then wander the aisles hoping to pick up a five pound bag of trail mix and an 18-pack of paper towels.

Amazon’s previous two quarters have been less-than-stellar.
